Letter: Fresh approach welcomed

I spoke at the Dec. 16 Clark County commissioners’ meeting regarding the ordinance amendment proposed by Commissioner Tom Mielke. I said some of what I intended to say but not all. Here’s what I wished I’d said:

Investing energy in making “improvements” to the organization chart is not going to make this a better place to live and work. What I think the commissioners should be doing is helping to construct a context where citizens and county employees have the desire and opportunity to continually improve our capacity to produce results that deliver the community what we most want.

That’s the commissioners’ opportunity and responsibility, not rearranging the boxes on the organization chart, or freezing those boxes in the face of an environment of constantly accelerating change.

Mielke’s lack of humility is stunning. Commissioner David Madore’s response to this amendment is a welcome surprise. Commissioner Jeanne Stewart’s willingness to publicly reveal her assumptions that led to her vote is refreshing and encouraging.
