My mom was an amazing woman, coal miners daughter, military wife, business owner, and my best friend.

Mom worked a fulltime job before it became “the norm”, raised four children, and buried a husband of 49 years. She started her own business while people her age were thinking about retirement.

At the age of 74, most women were taking up knitting, gardening, going to bingo. But not my mom, she went to modeling school! She loved the glamour of it!

As the years passed, mom started to get more forgetful and then the day came, a diagnosis: Alzheimer’s. The stealer of conversation, thoughts and most precious of all memories.

Mom’s last days were spent being cared for by others, but even in the haze of Alzheimer’s, mom was still teaching us. How dignity isn’t about whether you can care for yourself, or the conversations you can carry on. It’s about your spirit, finding joy in the moment, and learning how to let go.

I haven’t quite mastered this last lesson yet.

But I’m trying.
