A Portland man led police on a brief chase on southbound Interstate 5 in Vancouver on Saturday morning, at one point yelling at troopers out an open driver-side door, according to Washington State Patrol.

Steven Alcorn, 53, was driving south on I-5 near Northeast 99th Street at about 9:44 a.m. Saturday when police attempted to stop him for speeding. Alcorn slowed his vehicle and changed lanes as if he were going to pull over, then sped up and changed lanes again, passing traffic at speeds up to 90 mph, police said.

Alcorn’s vehicle began to have engine troubles at about Milepost 3, according to police. Still traveling about 25 to 30 mph, Alcorn opened his driver-side door and began yelling at a trooper, police said. Troopers repeatedly used an intercom to tell Alcorn to stop while he continued fleeing, according to WSP.

After troopers unsuccessfully tried to push Alcorn’s vehicle into a spin, Alcorn finally pulled to the right shoulder of I-5 and stopped, police said.

Alcorn was taken into custody without incident. A subsequent search of his vehicle found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, police said.

Alcorn was booked at the Clark County Jail for felony eluding, drug charges and driving while suspended, police said.
