Weather Eye: After brief rain, clearing skies, and then maybe a wintry mix

Saturday was wonderful after the low clouds and fog cleared. With highs at 60 degrees or better in many areas, even along the coast, it was a far cry from what is headed our way.

I mentioned here last week that an arctic blast of Canadian air would be headed into the U.S. on Monday, but I figured it would stay east of the Rockies as usual. Computer forecast models now insist that some of this modified arctic air will blast down the Columbia River Gorge and over the Cascades peaks into the metro area.

This means much colder temperatures, not the balmy weather we’ve been accustomed to having the past few months. So, expect a quick shot of rain today, and clearing skies Monday with east winds developing. Fair weather Tuesday, but highs only in the 40s and frost in the wind-sheltered areas overnight. Wednesday will also be cold, barely getting past 40 degrees.

A weather system poised off the southern Oregon Coast will keep cold air through the Gorge over us. As moisture overrides the dome of cold air in the Wednesday/Thursday time frame, snow will fall in the Gorge. If the cold air is thick enough we see a wintry mix here Wednesday or Thursday.

If it were a month from now I’d call it a setup for a good snowstorm. But it is still early November, with not much snow cover in Canada to really get the temperatures chilly.

I enjoyed the sunny weather Saturday and strung the Christmas lights outside while listening to Christmas music. I also removed my hoses and covered the faucets. Maybe you do the same today?
