Weather Eye: Enjoy Sunday’s ‘bonus’ sunshine, because more rain is coming

Folks on Mount Hood were grinning ear to ear Wednesday as the first really good snowfall had begun. Enough snow to turn the ground white at Timberline and Mount Hood Meadows and a couple of inches of snow on the higher ski lifts.

Timberline hopes to open Nov. 15 and Meadows on Thanksgiving Day. As we get in between storms over the weekend much, if not all, may melt away. But next week more wet storms are forecast with lower snow levels than this week. It is just about normal to get snow in the middle of October so hopefully it will be a good snow season.

Down here in the lowlands we endured typical October weather with several blustery squalls moving through. Some heavy downpours, a clap or two of thunder. Enough to announce to the countryside that yes, the seasons have changed.

We should luck out and get a bonus day on Sunday if things go as forecast. Maybe back into the 70s. But next week looks rather damp. So do any outside chores, visit the pumpkin patch on the bonus day.

As of 4 p.m. Wednesday we did not crack 60 degrees for a high temperature. That hasn’t happened since May 9. It actually felt good to have a fire in the fireplace Tuesday night, the first of many, I’m sure.

The rain as of 4 p.m. in Vancouver totaled just under 1 inch for October. We are still about one-quarter of an inch below average.

We are looking at a fairly nice day today, rain Friday and showers ending on Saturday. A nice day Sunday and then off and on rain all next week. So not all bad.
