A 47-year-old Camas man was in serious condition in a hospital Sunday after he was reportedly shot by his girlfriend in the Barberton area, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

Shortly before 5:30 p.m., police were dispatched to 6803 N.E. 119th St. on a report of a woman shooting her boyfriend in the hand with a shotgun, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. When police arrived at the scene, they found the victim in the front yard of the home; he was bleeding, unresponsive and drifting in and out of consciousness, according to the news release.

After the man was taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, police tried to contact a woman inside the home using a public-address system, but they got no response, the news release said. A SWAT team and crisis negotiators were then called to the scene to assist police, according to the sheriff’s office.

Nearby streets were shut down, and residents were either evacuated or asked to take shelter in their homes.

Negotiators obtained the woman’s cellphone number and called her.

“The suspect eventually answered her phone and during a 30 minute process ,(negotiators) got her to remove the barricades from her front door and surrender to the officers outside,” the news release said.

Police arrested 51-year-old Shari L. Brown, of Vancouver, according to the news release. The charges she faces will become clearer once investigators are able to interview the victim, the sheriff’s office said. The sheriff’s Tactical Detective and Major Crimes units are investigating the case.

The victim’s name was not released Sunday because police hadn’t yet notified his family of his injuries.
