Tim Martinez: Perfect few days to see great competition

The forecast says that Monday will be the warmest day of 2015 to date with afternoon temperatures creeping into the 80s.

Sounds like a perfect day to get outside and enjoy some of the best of high school sports in Clark County.

If you’re looking for something different, you might want to head out to Tri-Mountain Golf Course this morning for the Titan Cup.

The Titan Cup, hosted by Union High School, is a Ryder Cup-style tournament that celebrates team golf. Four teams will be competing: Camas, Hockinson, Prairie and Union.

Not available for an all-day event? No problem. There are plenty of late afternoon or evening events for the choosing.

In baseball, the ninth-ranked and 4A Greater St. Helens League leading Union Titans travel to play Evergreen at 4 p.m.

In softball, the upstart Heritage squad, fresh off a win over Battle Ground, looks to be the first team to knock off first-place Camas when the Timberwolves host the Papermakers.

In soccer, Camas has a firm grasp on first place as the Papermakers have finished the first half of the league schedule with a 6-0 mark.

The second half of the league schedule starts this week with games Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

On Monday, McKenzie Stadium hosts a doubleheader with Battle Ground vs. Evergreen at 5 p.m. and Union vs. Mountain View at 7 p.m. as teams look to see which one will try to challenge Camas in the second half of league play.

Tuesday looks to be the end of the 70-plus degree weather as clouds, showers and temps in the 60s return Wednesday.

But there are still events worth taking a look at the rest of the week. Here’s a glance at a few.

TUESDAY — BOYS SOCCER: La Center faces a big match as the Wildcats (4-2 in the Trico League) host first-place White Salmon (5-0).

WEDNESDAY — SOFTBALL: Battle Ground and Camas, two of the frontrunners in the 4A GSHL, meet for the first time this season at Camas. In the 2A GSHL, Woodland and Hockinson open the week as the last two unbeatens in league play. They will meet for the first time at Hockinson.

FRIDAY — BASEBALL: Woodland and Ridgefield lead the very competitive 2A GSHL with 3-1 records. Those two teams meet for the first time at Ridgefield.

FRIDAY — SOFTBALL: Teams in the 3A GSHL get some non-league games on the schedule early in the week. But league play resumes on Friday as Prairie plays Columbia River at VGSA.

SATURDAY — TRACK AND FIELD: Union, Skyview, Mountain View, Heritage, Prairie and Woodland are some of the Washington schools scheduled to send athletes to the 51st annual Centennial Invitational at Centennial High School in Gresham, Ore.
