Authorities arrested a Vancouver man Wednesday morning after he allegedly set a portion of an occupied apartment complex on fire in Hazel Dell.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office and Clark County Fire District 6 responded shortly after 6 a.m. to a small fire at the Oak Tree Apartments at 7317 N.E. Hazel Dell Ave., according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

Responders said they found a portion of the apartment complex had been set on fire and that flames reached approximately 10 feet high on the side of the complex.

The fire was quickly extinguished.

No occupants were evacuated, and there were no reported injuries.

Fire investigators also discovered that three mounted fire extinguishers on the side of the complex had been removed and intentionally discharged, but not in an effort to put out the fire, according to the news release.

A resident of the complex, 49-year-old Mark O’Neil, had been observed in the immediate area where the fire had started just before the alarm was activated.

He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of first-degree arson.

A motive for the alleged arson was unknown Wednesday. The case remains under investigation.
