Vancouver — C-Tran will launch construction of The Vine, its planned bus rapid transit system, with a groundbreaking ceremony in Vancouver later this month, the transit agency announced.

The ceremony will begin at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, at Turtle Place plaza, located along West Seventh Street between Main and Washington streets in downtown Vancouver. The event will include speeches and refreshments provided by local businesses, according to C-Tran.

The Vine will run between the Westfield Vancouver mall and downtown, primarily along the city’s Fourth Plain corridor. The enhanced bus system will use 60-foot articulated vehicles and 34 new stations, operating with more frequency than the existing bus service on the corridor.

The $53 million project is the largest in C-Tran’s history. The Vine is scheduled to open in late 2016, according to the agency.
