Latino students from any Clark County middle school who are interested in developing leadership skills are invited to attend a ¡La Chispa! Bilingual Workshop from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 19 at Mountain View High School, 1500 S.E. Blairmont Drive. Students should register through their school counselor.

¡La Chispa! (translated “the Spark”) workshops use both English and Spanish to help students build self-confidence, strengthen cultural identity and increase academic success.

The Mountain View event is one of 14 ¡La Chispa! Bilingual Workshops around the state delivered by the student leadership program of the Association of Washington School Principals. Mountain View students will serve as mentors and small-group leaders. There is space for up to 250 middle school students to attend. So far, about half of those slots have been filled, said Amy Ruger, Multicultural Club adviser at Mountain View.

For details about the workshop, visit www.lacima.org.

In addition, Mountain View High School is hosting a Latino Family Night and Resource Fair for families from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 19. The free event begins with dinner. Information will be available in Spanish and English from more than two dozen community organizations, including Clark College, Washington State University Vancouver, the Vancouver Police Department and staff from the Family-Community Resource Centers at Marrion and Crestline elementary schools.
