Letter: Threat of censure lacks sense

The Columbian
Published: January 20, 2015, 4:00pm

I did not vote for U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, and don’t particularly like some of her views. However, I thought that a “representative” did just that, represented the opinions of individuals in their state, including their wishes for some compromise. A Jan. 15 story reported “Herrera Beutler answers critics: Clark County GOP will vote on whether to censure lawmaker.” How can a party committee censure someone for voting as their continuents wanted them to? How can they further suggest that her “pattern of voting with Democrats” was a betrayal of their committee, instead of an honest attempt at compromise? Since when does a small county committee have the right to dictate to a representative elected by the people?
