Weather Eye: Dry and warm weather to return, at least for a few days

We finally had a few of those raindrops in the bucket Wednesday; not much, enough to settle the dust and that was it. Generally around a tenth of an inch or so, although one more line of showers was heading our way as I write this column late Wednesday afternoon. We may add a bit more to our monthly total.

Snow fell in the higher Cascades above the timberline, so not much help to the lower elevations. Today and Friday look dry and warm; in fact I expect 70 degrees on Friday if high clouds do not temper things. Those clouds are the forerunner of another mild weather system from the southwest that could produce a fair amount of rain over the weekend, with Saturday the wettest.

About 6 inches or more of snow will fall in the Cascades over the weekend but again, only in the highest reaches. With expected warm and dry conditions predicted the rest of the month, I think our snow season is basically over. Too late to catch up now.

Forecast charts for next week are flip-flopping all over the place. Monday and Tuesday looked dry the other day; Wednesday afternoon some models were bringing in more showers. Some forecasters are placing a chance of showers each day next week. Yeah, a chance but how much? My feeling is it is only Thursday, let’s enjoy a couple nice days and a couple damp days and then worry about next week.

Too bad this weekend is forecast to be wet but not a washout. The past month or so we enjoyed beautiful weekends.

I don’t know which is growing faster, the moss or the lawn. At least both are green. We may have an early summer season this year and the wildfire situation could be critical. Already there have been some brush fires on both sides of the mountains.

We’ll chat on Sunday and share the February rainfall reports from your friends and neighbors.
