Letter: Port needs people’s champion

The Columbian
Published: May 5, 2015, 5:00pm

To those of us who witnessed the port commission proceedings on April 14, and considering the slick brochure featuring Commissioner Nancy Baker on the cover that many received in the mail, it appeared that some electioneering was going on.

Nancy Baker is a sweet lady. I understand that she has done some great things for the Port of Vancouver and for labor. She made a mistake when she went along with the staff and her fellow commissioners by inviting Tesoro-Savage to build the largest oil terminal in North America, in Vancouver. When it was apparent that this, indeed, was a terrible idea, she did not stand up to the others, but continued to champion this project.

The taxpayers, both in and outside of the blast zone, need a commissioner who will stand for their best interests; someone who will also recognize that major decisions, like this one, affect not only those of us in Vancouver, but every community and citizen along the rail route.
