Community notebook: Vancouver Lake to host regatta Friday

More than 600 rowers from 25 clubs will descend upon Vancouver Lake on Friday for the U.S. Rowing Northwest Youth Rowing Championships.

The annual regatta is the opportunity for high school rowers from around the region to compete for spots in the youth national championships.

Racing is scheduled to run from 8 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. on Friday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 7 a.m. to noon on Sunday. Vancouver Lake Park is the place to watch the races.

Vancouver Lake Crew is will be represented by 26 rowers with 28 boats entered across varsity, junior varsity and novice divisions.

Gabi White, who represented Vancouver Lake Crew at junior nationals in 2014, will compete in the girls varsity singles and doubles divisions. Veronica Nicacio will team with White in the varsity girls doubles races.

Among the boys varsity entries from Vancouver Lake Crew, Tuck Wilcox and Niko John will team up in two varsity events, racing in both the pairs (two rowers, each with one oar) and doubles (two rowers, each with two oars) divisions.

Pickleball in Washougal

Registration is open for a pickleball tournament to be held June 5-7 at Hathaway Park in Washougal. The Washougal Rivers Edge Tournament — Pickleball for the Ages — will feature men’s doubles on June 5, mixed doubles on June 6 and women’s doubles on June 7. Registration costs $35 through May 15, $45 if registered by May 29. There is a limit of 50 teams in each tournament.

The tournament is sanctioned by the USA Pickleball Association and will be bracketed by age groups in 10-year increments starting at age 19.

Volleyball team places second at regional

The Excel NW 12 Rox girls volleyball team finished second in the Columbia Empire Volleyball Association regional tournament.

By placing second in the 12-and-younger division of the tournament, the Clark County team qualifies for a USA Volleyball Girls Junior Nationals, to be held in June at New Orleans.

Excel NW 12 Rox went 5-1 at the CEVA regionals, held May 2-3 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. Excel NW went 3-0 in pool play on May 2, then won quarterfinal and semifinal matches on Sunday before losing the championship match.

Portland Volleyball Club Pink won the championship match 25-22 and 25-23. Excel NW won its quarterfinal and semifinal matches in straight sets after winning six of eight sets in pool play.

Players for Excel NW 12 Rox are: Emma Villaluz, Abigail Watson, Renee Tassin, Caroline Hansen, Tyra Schaub, Lauren Stemple, Emilea Stepaniuk, Maddie Sheron, Mackenzie Hancock, Josie Delich and Olivia Pederson. The coaches are Denise Carter-Riggins and Jim Sparks.

The Columbia Empire Volleyball Association includes clubs between the Longview-Kelso area and Roseburg, Ore.
