The person killed in a fiery single-vehicle crash early Friday morning was identified as a Portland man.

Richard Timmerman Jr., 28, was the driver and only occupant in a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta that was traveling west on state Highway 14 at about 1:15 a.m. Friday, according to authorities.

While taking the onramp to Interstate 205, the Jetta left the roadway, struck a tree and caught fire, according to Washington State Patrol.

Timmerman died of smoke inhalation, the Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office reported.

Washington State Patrol is continuing its investigation into what caused the crash.
