Weather Eye: Slow-starting rainy season inches us toward October average

The rain Sunday came down pretty good at times, enough to surpass the half-inch mark in the rain gauge. Still, as of 4 p.m. Monday, Vancouver was running about an inch and a half below average for the month.

We have another storm heading our way Wednesday that may bring another half-inch, if we are lucky, and then one for Halloween that could bring us close to normal for the month. We’ll see if these storms split or weaken before dousing us. At least we are slowly getting into the rainy season. At this point, trick-or-treating outdoors could be on the damp, blustery side. It all depends on timing, so a fine-tuning will come later in the week.

The breezy conditions Sunday evening knocked plenty of leaves off the trees. Some varieties are almost completely bare. It won’t be long.

We almost forgot to share last month’s rainfall from your friends and neighbors. I measured 0.82 inch here in Salmon Creek; Larry Lebsack, Barberton, 1.42 inch; Gary Collins, Brush Prairie, 1.82 inch; Ellen Smart, Ridgefield, 0.70 inch; Judy Darke, Felida, 0.83 inch; David Campbell, Heisson, 2.32 inches; Merle Moore, Yacolt, 1.40 inch; Claudia Chiasson, Carson, 1.47 inch; Pete Conrad, Battle Ground, 0.79 inch; Robert Starr, Cougar, 1.85 inch; Robin Ruzek, Lakeshore, 0.92 inch; Jim Knoll, Five Corners, 1.18 inch; Tyler Mode, Battle Ground, 1.02 inch; Phil Delany, above Dole Valley, 1.70 inch; and our friend in the other Vancouver (British Columbia), Roland Derksen, 2.04 inches. Weather observer Phil Delany noted that September’s rainfall of 1.70 inch was nothing compared to September 2014, when he recorded 14.80 inches of rain. No wonder we are in a drought of sorts.

October is running below average, but with more rain Wednesday and again Saturday, we may inch closer to normal by the time the clock ticks midnight on Halloween. At least the giant weather machine is slowly shifting gears.
