Timbers notes: Portland (11 wins, 9 losses, 8 ties, 41 points) entered the weekend in sixth place in the Western Conference, tied with Sporting Kansas City one point behind Seattle and one point ahead of San Jose. … This is only the second game in three weeks for the Timbers, who played Sporting Kansas City to a scoreless draw on Sept. 9. … Portland coach Caleb Porter should have a full roster available. Diego Chara was suspended for the previous two matches. Will Johnson and Alvas Powell missed the Sept. 9 match on international duty. Said Porter: “We’ve worked very hard to maintain our fitness and our sharpness. But I know we’re going to go into the game very fresh and energized.”

The Timbers are 7-1-6 at home this season and have a run of 10 home matches without a loss. This is the third visit by the Red Bulls to Portland. Both of the previous matches were 3-3 draws. … Porter said that early goals have led to high-scoring matches against the Red Bulls. But the Timbers don’t score early. Only seven of their 29 goals have come in the first half this season.

The Timbers will recognize many former NASL and MLS Timbers players at halftime. This season marks the 40th anniversary of the original Timbers 1975 debut.

Red Bulls notes: New York (13-8-6, 45 points) entered the weekend second in the Eastern Conference, one point behind New England, which beat the Red Bulls 2-1 on Wednesday. But New York has played two fewer games than both New England and D.C. United which also entered the weekend with 45 points. … The Red Bulls will be without midfielder Dax McCarty and right back Connor Lade who are suspended for yellow card accumulation. … Although he is in a slightly different role than last season, Bradley Wright-Phillips continues to pace the Red Bulls attack with 14 goals and seven assists this season. Midfielder Sacha Kljestan has a team-best 10 assists. … The Red Bulls have scored 47 goals — 18 more than the Timbers who have played one more game and two fewer than the 49 scored by the league leading Los Angeles Galaxy. … New York is 7-2-1 in its last 10 games and has only three losses since late June.
