1. Study the clouds

With this winter offering a variety of weather patterns, kids can get the behind-the-scenes knowledge with “Full Steam Ahead: Weather Science” at the Three Creeks Community Library, 800 N.E. Tenney Road, Vancouver. Learn about weather science with meteorologist Steve Pierce of KOIN-TV as children ages 12 and younger create their own winter wonderland scene from 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 2. 360-906-4790

2. Ballet gems

The Liberty Theatre will offer another performance of the Bolshoi Ballet on screen. The renowned Russian company will perform “Jewels,” a homage to places and dance styles that inspired famed choreographer George Balanchine. Representing different gems, the schools and cities of Paris, New York and St. Petersburg are celebrated through dance. The screening begins at 12:55 p.m. Jan. 3 at the Camas theater, 315 N.E. 3. Local laughs

This week’s Stand Up Comedy Showcase will be headlined by Susan Rice, recently named Portland’s Funniest Person 2015 by Willamette Week. A native of Longview, Rice moved to Portland and began doing stand up in 1983. Now 64, Rice surprises many with her comedy, and is a mentor to young comics in the community. The show will feature local comedians Amanda Arnold, Scoot Herring, Cedric Mitchell, and Aaron Klopfer. The show kicks off at 8 p.m. Jan. 7 at the Kiggins Theatre, 1101 Main St., Vancouver, and is hosted by Tristian Spillman. Tickets are $10. 360-816-0352 or www.kigginstheatre.net

4. By the strings

Aspiring rock stars still have a chance to see “Guitar: The Instrument That Rocked The World,” on display through Jan. 10 at the Oregon Museum of Science & Industry, 1945 S.E. Water Ave., Portland. Take part in the science of music through hands-on displays, a 44-foot long guitar, a LED piano, laser harp and other unconventional instruments. Much of the exhibit focuses on the cultural history of the guitar, with a daily live stage show at noon, including performances by bluegrass band Wolf and Raven, students of Ethos Music Center and the PDX Broadsides. OMSI’s exhibits are open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. 5. Mystery party

Visit a pastry-themed book launch party for “On Thin Icing,” the third book in the “Bakeshop Mystery” series by local author Ellie Alexander. Pastry chef Kristina Cortez-Marchessault of Tier Catering will give icing demonstrations, show off her cake designs, give out samples, and there will be a cake raffle from local bakers. There will be an author chat with Alexander, Cortez-Marchessault and host Missy Maki at 6 p.m. Jan. 7 at Cellar 55, 1812 Washington St., Vancouver.
