Weather Eye: Wet weather pattern to return; mountains to get more snow

Well, it appears we will transition back to a wet pattern as California gets a little break from the action. There are a series of weather systems out in the Pacific that are looking right at us. It will get a bit wetter with each one that comes through. Rain will still fall in California but not quite as much as last week.

Good news for the mountains with more snow on the way. The lower slopes will start off as rain but turn snowy as the week progresses. The snowpack has dropped to below average for this time of the year so a reload would be great.

Monday’s weather system was rather weak, with generally about a tenth of an inch falling as of 5 p.m.

There were a few reports of icy conditions early Monday as overnight lows dropped to freezing or below in the outlying areas. It was short-lived, however. Vancouver’s rainfall total this month, as of 5 p.m. Monday, was .41 inch, about 1.75 inches below average. Warmer days have raised the average mean temperature to 34.5 degrees, still about 6 degrees below average.

At this point, I don’t see any real cold weather or snow heading our way the rest of the month. We can still get cold and snow down to city levels in February, but the odds dwindle after midmonth.

The change in the weather the past two months has brought an end to some of the toxins in the ocean off our coast. This has allowed fresh crabs to hit the local market. Clam digging was allowed on Long Beach beginning Jan. 7 and running through Thursday. Good news.
