The Washington State Patrol is asking for help identifying the pedestrian struck and killed Wednesday on Interstate 5 south of Mill Plain Boulevard.

State patrol said the man was jogging in the right lane of the highway after 11:30 p.m. when he was hit by a man driving a Jeep Wrangler.

Troopers described the pedestrian as a young white or possible mixed race man who was 6 feet 1 inches tall, weighed 160 pounds and wore a sparse mustache. The man had hazel eyes and roughly 10-inch long, brown hair.

He was wearing a black tank top with the words “Brass Tacks Sandwiches,” orange shorts, brown sandals and a gray or faded-black fedora-like hat, troopers said. He also wore a multicolored bracelet made of pipe cleaners and carried a small stuffed squirrel toy in his pocket.

The state patrol asked anyone who can help identify the man to call Detective Justin Maier at 360-449-7943 or Detective Jennifer Ortiz at 360-449-7948.

Marion Thomas, 49, was driving the Jeep. Troopers performed a field sobriety test and a drug recognition evaluation on Thomas, both showing Thomas was not impaired. The state patrol said Thomas also volunteered a blood sample, which was sent to the state crime lab.

Thomas was also behind the wheel when, in 2014, he fatally struck a pedestrian trying to cross six lanes of Northeast Highway 99. Investigators also found no evidence of impairment in that crash, and no criminal charges were filed.
