Community notebook: Rogers wins Greco-Roman title in Fargo

Battle Ground’s James Rogers is a national champion.

Rogers won the 152-pound weight class at the USA Wrestling Greco-Roman Cadet Nationals in Fargo, N.D., on Monday.

Rogers, who will be a sophomore at Battle Ground High School beat Tyler Dow of Wisconsin 12-0. He won a weight class that included 54 wrestlers ages 16-17.

Jackson McKinney, who will be a junior at Skyview High School, placed seventh in the 182-pound weight class.

In all, 10 Clark County wrestlers are in Fargo this week for Greco-Roman and freestyle competitions. They include high school state champions Ethan Rotondo (Union) and Abby Lees (Washougal).

Hockinson team opens plays at ASA national

The Northwest Raptors, a Hockinson-based girls fastpitch softball team, is playing in a national tournament beginning today in Broken Arrow, Okla.

The 16-and-under Gold ASA/USA National Championship includes 34 teams. In pool-play, the Raptors will play four times today and twice on Wednesday. They will play each of the other three teams in their group twice. Bracket play runs Thursday through Saturday.

Players for the Raptors are Lilly Casey, Haley Buck, Lorigan Steuben, Kaila Ward, Amber Griffith, Hailey Starnes, Danielle Joli, Hannah Starnes, Morgan Stradley, Paige Forsberg, Paige Stinson, Chloe Blehm and Alexis Morrison.  Casey, Ward, Hailey Starnes and Stinson did not travel to nationals. Abby Runyon and Hailey Runyon were added to the roster for nationals.

Local softball team wins state title

The Northwest Wild won the Washington ASA 18-and-under girls fastpitch softball state championship on July 10.

The team of players from Clark County won the state title by winning six of its seven games during the tournament played at the Vancouver Girls Softball Association complex in Salmon Creek.

Members of the team are: Alyssa Duran, Rebecca Bennett, Lindsay MacNeil, Megan Figgins, Alexandra Barter, Carissa Cutler, Abbi Bushong, Tianna Bolger, Hannah Prather, Andrea Poggio and Miranda Billette. The team was coached by RT Cutler and Craig Figgins.

The Wild beat Menace Fastpitch of Richland 4-1 in the final game.

Grimshaw, McChesney win CCRC races

Mike Grimshaw and Jesse McChesney were the winners of the July 13 Clark County Running Club runs along the Washougal dike.

Grimshaw, 51, won the 5-mile run with a time of 31 minutes and 26 seconds that was almost 2 minutes ahead of the runner-up. Lauren Mahnke, 14, was the first female to finish the 5-miler. Her time of 38:50 was ninth fastest among the 35 finishers.

McChesney, 28 won the 3-mile race with a time of 15:30. That was one second faster than Oscar Bauman, 43. Katrina Mueller, 24, of Vancouver was the first female finisher of the 3-miler. Her time of 19:36 was 13th best among 85 finishers.

This week, the CCRC Wednesday series moves to Round Lake Park in Camas. The run starts at 7 p.m. Registration starts at 6:30 p.m. and costs $2 for those who are not CCRC members.

Three selected to Area Code Games

Three players from Clark County were selected to represent the Northwest at the Area Code Games baseball tournament.

Seniors-to-be Brody Barnum and Nick Jennings of Skyview High School and Isaiah Smith of Battle Ground were selected following tryouts over the weekend in Spokane. They are among 28 players from the Northwest who will play on the Kansas City Royals team at the Area Code Games.

The Area Code Games are one of several invitational tournaments held annually to give promising young baseball players a chance to be seen by scouts and college baseball coaches. The tournament is Aug. 6-10 in Long Beach, Calif.

Barnum made the team as an outfielder, Jennings as a right-handed pitcher and Smith as an outfielder.

Mike Spellacy, who attended Battle Ground for two years before moving to Puyallup, made the team as an infielder.

Tri-Mountain to host ‘Largest’ golf outing

Tri-Mountain Golf Course is participating in the World’s Largest Golf Outing, a nationwide event on Aug. 1.

The sixth-annual event is held to raise funds for the Fisher House Foundation, which provides places for military and veterans families to stay while loved ones are receiving medical treatment.

The golfing begins at 8 a.m. and costs $80 for an individual player. Registration is open for individuals, twosomes and foursomes by calling 703-904-3600 or visiting www.worldslargestgolfouting.com.

V-ball, soccer camps seek participants

The 10th-annual Cardinal Volleyball Camp will be held in August at St. Joseph School in Vancouver. The camp for boys and girls entering grades 3-8 will be held Aug. 8-11. The camp for boys and girls entering grades 7-8 is Aug. 22-25.

The cost of the camp is $90 per session.
