Weather Eye: Get ready to warm up this week to highs of 90 degrees or hotter

Sunday and Monday were summery, and a little warmer than I thought looking at things Saturday afternoon and that I shared with you in Sunday’s column. It is all OK, however, because this is usually the hottest week of the year. A pair of 86-degree highs Sunday and Monday were about 4 degrees above average. It was about time, don’t you think?

A weak weather system fades through the region today, with a few degrees knocked off the high temperature.

I guess the big news is the two or three hot days on tap for this week. How hot? I think — if things go as planned — we’ll see 90- to 95-degree highs on Thursday and Friday. Wednesday could see 90 but most likely in the upper 80s.

If we have 90 degrees or better this week, it will be the first 90-degree high this month and the first since June 6. We have only seen 90 degrees or hotter three times this summer. We would usually see about a dozen or more 90-degree highs each summer. So we have a ways to go.

In July, we have recorded 18 days with high temperatures only in the 70s. Most of our highs in July are close to and above 80 degrees, so a cooler-than-average month so far.

Let’s review some rainfall totals for June from your friends and neighbors: Claudia Chiasson, Carson, 4.59 inches; Bob Starr, Cougar, 4.87 inches; Gary Collins, Brush Prairie, 2.74 inches; Robin Ruzek, Lake Shore, 1.62 inches; Tom Dixon, Amboy, 4.18 inches; Pete Conrad near Tukes Mountain, 2.05 inches; Merle Moore, 2 miles west of Yacolt, 4.59 inches; Dave Campbell, 1 mile west of Heisson, 3.96 inches; Judy Darke, Felida, 1.91 inches; Larry Lebsack, Barberton, 1.74 inches; Ellen Smart, Ridgefield, 1.50 inches; and Roland Derksen from Vancouver, B.C., had 2.74 inches. The official rainfall for our Vancouver was 1.45 inches, .34 inch below average.
