This year’s Symbol of Freedom events feature an officer who will share his story of escorting a fallen Marine home.

Marine Lt. Col. Michael Strobl will headline the two-event series, which provides funding and visibility for CDM Caregiving Services.

Lance Cpl. Chance Phelps, a 19-year-old Marine, was killed in Iraq in 2004. Strobl wrote an account of escorting Phelps’ body home to Dubois, Wyo., and the story — “Taking Chance” — became an HBO movie in 2009.

The events start on Nov. 1 with a 5:30 p.m. reception at the Artillery Barracks, 600 Hatheway Road. Tickets are $100.

The lunch will be at 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 2 at WareHouse ’23, 100 Columbia St.; doors open at 11 a.m. Tickets are $60.

A combination ticket for both events is $130.

CDM Caregiving Services is a nonprofit agency that provides care for the elderly and disabled. The Symbol of Freedom events, typically held around Veterans Day, reflect its mission of keeping the elderly and disabled in their homes as long as possible.

Reservations can made at CDMCaregiving.org or by calling 360-750-3825.
