Letter: Justice is not a political issue

By Wilbur Wood, VANCOUVER

The recent letter (“Liberals lack principles,” Sept. 10) that credited “essentially Puritans” as the founders of the U.S. ignored the fact that the Puritans hung Mary Dyer because she worshiped God in the manner of Quakers, and then went big time with the killing of 20 “witches” in Salem. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and most other founders of our nation were not Puritans.

The letter writer blames liberal judges for declaring that businesses must treat gay persons on the same level as all others. This harkens back to Jefferson’s words “all men are created equal.” That was not a law then, but it stands behind our law today. Anyone doing public business must deal equally with all men and women. In your home, you may put up signs like “Whites only,” “Jews not welcome,” and “No wheelchairs.” The judges’ rulings aren’t a liberal or conservative issue; they’re a matter of justice.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
