Sheriff’s office: Deputy shoots attacker at Brush Prairie home

A man spotted climbing on several vehicles outside a Brush Prairie home attacked a Clark County sheriff’s deputy Wednesday afternoon, prompting the deputy to open fire, injuring the alleged assailant, according to the sheriff’s office.

The incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. at a rural home at 11518 N.E. 126th Ave.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Fred Neiman said deputies were summoned to the home after a man, who apparently doesn’t live on the property, was seen jumping on vehicles parked near the home and acting strangely. At least three recreational vehicles and multiple passenger vehicles were parked near the house.

Evergreen teachers demand big raises

The Evergreen Education Association is demanding big raises for district teachers, and absent “reasonable salary” increases, is already threatening a strike vote this summer.

The union, which represents about 1,800 teachers and certificated staff at Evergreen Public Schools, had an emergency representative meeting Wednesday after union President Rob Lutz said recent bargaining meetings went sour. There, 120 representatives voted unanimously to recommend the general membership vote to strike at its Aug. 23 meeting if a “reasonable and appropriate salary scale” isn’t set.

Positivity powers woman as she battles medical mystery

On her 29th birthday, Catherine Martinez lost the ability to walk.

It started around 5:30 a.m. when Martinez woke up to use the restroom. She sat on her toilet and couldn’t go. That seemed weird. Then she noticed that it didn’t even feel like she was sitting, and her hip area was cold and numb. Nevertheless, the Vancouver resident continued to work at a Spectrum call center, and within about an hour of being there, the numbness had traveled down her legs.

Vancouver man killed in high-speed hit-run crash

A 29-year-old Vancouver man was killed early Saturday in a hit-and-run crash on state Highway 503 about 2 miles north of Vancouver, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The crash was reported at 1:46 a.m. after two cars speeding south on the highway collided near 119th Street. Witnesses said that it appeared the cars had been street racing. The impact sent Ariel J. Romano’s gold 2002 Toyota Corolla sedan off the roadway, across the entrance to Prairie High School and into a large tree, according to the WSP.
