A Vancouver man remains in serious condition at an area hospital Monday morning after being hit by a car about 24 hours earlier.

Kurtis Charles Knell, 30, was struck on state Highway 500 at 112th Avenue while trying to help a friend.

The Washington State Patrol said Knell and Amanda L. Clark, 22, of Vancouver were both riding motorcycles westbound about 12:44 a.m. Sunday when Clark lost control of her 2003 Honda CBR600 and came to rest in the middle of the highway. Knell helped her off the roadway and then went to get her motorcycle.

Westbound motorist Matthew D. Curtis, 30, of Vancouver struck Knell with a 1994 Toyota pickup. The truck was totaled, the patrol said.

Knell suffered broken ribs and a broken pelvis, the patrol said, and was taken to Southwest Washington Medical Center. Later Sunday, he was transferred to OHSU Hospital.

His condition had not changed as of Monday morning, a hospital official said.

The accident is under investigation and no arrests had been made, according to a patrol press release.
