DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Kara Patterson notched the best javelin throw in the U.S. this year at 202 feet, 9 inches at a windy and rainy Drake Relays.

Patterson’s throw was the fifth-best mark in the world this year and also set a Drake Stadium record.

Nasty conditions blew into Des Moines by Friday morning. Wind-swept showers dampened the second fully day of competition and helped keep the record books safe.

The rain petered out to a drizzle by the afternoon. Officials can only hope the weather clears for Saturday’s meet finale, which should feature one of the stronger fields at Drake recently.

Saturday’s headliners include hometown star Lolo Jones and Olympic gold medalist Stephanie Brown-Trafton in the women’s discus.
