Weather Eye: April showers will give way to May sunshine

As mentioned here in Sunday’s column, the rain and blustery conditions did indeed move in late Monday as a large area of low pressure headed inland. This will keep those remaining April showers going for a couple of days at least. Good news is that the month of May looks like it will roll in under sunny skies and warm temperatures, at least at this point. In fact, the first two weeks of May were looking fairly decent as I analyzed the extended weather models on Monday.

With this latest bout of April showers and cooler weather, we could end up with a fairly average month in terms of both temperature and precipitation. As of Monday, we were running about a degree above average and three-quarters of an inch below average in the rain category. If the weather does turn warm and dry in May, we would be talking about maybe doing some watering of the yard and garden.

It is still possible to get a frost in the outlying regions for the next few weeks. For instance, in areas such as Felida and Hazel Dell, the average last frost is around May 17. I usually plant my warm-weather crops and set out my geraniums around Mother’s Day. On occasion over the years, I’ve had to go out and protect the tender plants.

If skies clear Friday morning, it is possible for some chilly low temperatures, so stay tuned.

The mountains will once again get some snow today and into the next couple of days, with the snow level occasionally dropping to pass levels.

That deadly tornado that struck Mississippi on Saturday, killing ten people, was the deadliest tornado since May 10, 2008, when 22 perished in Oklahoma and Missouri.
