VANCOUVER — The Environmental Protection Agency has named Evergreen Public Schools as a 2010 Energy Star Partner of the Year for its energy management and reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

The district will be recognized at an awards ceremony March 18 in Washington, D.C. Evergreen Public Schools is one of two school districts to be recognized.

The district has been an Energy Star partner since February 2009. Evergreen Public Schools saved more than $1 million last year by implementing numerous energy conservation practices, such as removing more than 20,000 lamps throughout the district, partnering with Clark Public Utilities for lighting and HVAC retrofit projects and installing Web-based thermostats in portable classrooms.

In 2009, the district posted reductions of its greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing more than 300 cars from the road or planting more than 400 acres of trees, Dave Cone, the district’s resource conservation manager, said in a news release.

The district was chosen as a partner of the year from more than 17,000 organizations participating in the program.
