ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — St Trinians will try to become the first filly or mare to win the $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap in its 73-year history.
The 5-year-old mare was the morning line favorite for the 114-mile race Saturday at Santa Anita, which drew a full field of 14. The best finish by a female was Next Move’s runner-up showing by a neck to Moonrush in 1951.
Britain-bred St Trinians has won four consecutive starts against other females by a combined 1612 lengths since being purchased and sent to the U.S. stable of trainer Mike Mitchell. She will carry 113 pounds, while four rivals, including Loup Breton, will carry co-high weight of 117.
Saturday’s card includes two other Grade 1 stakes: the $250,000 Frank E. Kilroe Mile on the turf and the $250,000 Santa Anita Oaks for 3-year-old fillies.
