BATTLE GROUND — The Battle Ground Tigers felt like they should have had this game won in regulation.

They made sure they got it done in overtime Thursday night at District Stadium.

Kevin Haynes scored on a 1-yard plunge in the second overtime, giving the Tigers a 20-14 victory over Woodland (0-3) in a non-league high school football game.

Tyler Bergeron blocked a Woodland field-goal attempt in the first OT, and Nohi Brede had an interception on Woodland’s second OT drive, setting up the Tiger dramatics.

The Tigers (1-2) overcame plenty of adversity in the fourth quarter. Woodland tied the game on an 80-yard touchdown drive, aided by three 15-yard penalties against the Battle Ground defense.

Both defenses shined through much of the game, though.

The Tigers missed a field-goal attempt on their first OT possession. That was followed by Bergeron’s blocked field goal, sending the game into a second OT session.

Brede picked off a deep pass on Woodland’s first play, giving the Tigers their next chance.

This time, they took advantage. Quarterback Chris Paul found Jake Blackman on a 22-yard pass for a first down at the 1-yard line. The next play, Haynes powered his way into the end zone, setting off a celebration for the home team.

Woodland tied the game midway through the fourth quarter when Nick Fuller kept his feet in play toward the back of the end zone on a fourth-down, 5-yard scoring toss from Adam Shoup. The quarterback then found David Lubinski for a 2-point conversion and a 14-14 tie.

Fuller finished with eight receptions for 131 yards and two scores.

Haynes scored the first touchdown of the game, catching a tipped ball in the end zone for a 27-yard scoring strike from Paul in the first quarter.

Woodland responded in the second quarter, with Fuller getting past the defense and catching a perfect pass from Shoup for a 51-yard scoring play.

Brede would rush for 58 yards on Battle Ground’s scoring drive toward the end of the first half. He then caught a 5-yard TD pass from Paul for a 14-6 lead at the break. Brede led the offense with 94 yards rushing.

Defense ruled the rest of the game.

Juan Arellano also had an interception for the Tigers, Daniel Wagner had three sacks, and Blackman was everywhere, making several stuffs in the fourth quarter.

Woodland’s defense was nearly as strong. Fuller, as a defensive back, knocked down at least two potential touchdown passes, and Jake Elliott had a fourth-quarter sack.
