A 36-year-old Vancouver man died Sunday in Skamania County when the machine he was operating went off a narrow road and rolled several times down a 250-foot embankment.

James Schiefelbein was inside a logging skidder, moving equipment on private land in the South Swift Reservoir area when he lost control of the tractor, according to a news release from the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office. Schiefelbein, who was ejected from the skidder, was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident was reported at 11:05 p.m.

The accident occurred about 10 miles southeast of Mount St. Helens. An investigation is ongoing.
