Open enrollment change worries school officials

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — A new law that gives students flexibility in transferring to other schools is worrying some school officials.

The law lets students transfer to any school they want in or out of their home district if there’s room at the school and district officials have said it’s OK.

Medford School Board Chairwoman Paulie Brading tells the Mail Tribune (http://bit.ly/rzlvgT) the board is studying the new law. School boards have until March 1 to decide whether to allow transfers next school year.

Medford board members say transfers can be appropriate but it could create staffing issues and other problems if a large number of students decide to transfer.

Officials in Ashland say the law could be beneficial. District student services director Samuel Bogdanove says it could help stem declining enrollment.
