Letter: Changes needed in Evergreen

By Lynn Samuels, Vancouver

With the sudden retirement of John Boyd, the Evergreen school board has an opportunity to do a reset for the district after losing a third superintendent in under seven years. I am hopeful that the board will take a much stronger leadership role, understanding that this degree of instability is due to a systemic failure and breakdown of the district leadership, which has left our community and staff frustrated and angry.

First, I would ask the board to take the time to identify and contract with an external educational leadership organization to do a full assessment of the district leadership and systems without the influence of upper management. Finally, I believe that no current upper management should be given any increased roles until it is determined what is in the best interest of our students and community.

These superintendents didn’t come and go in a vacuum, and I know that there are going to be some serious decisions that need to be made by the board, but I have to believe that they’re willing to step up knowing that the education of children is at stake if this district fails to reset itself.
