Letter: Claims contradicted

The Columbian
Published: August 3, 2012, 5:00pm

In her July 29 letter, “U.N. wants to take away our guns,” Liz Elfring encourages readers to “Stand up for our rights, our freedoms,” and “rebel” because “The U.N. is nearing completion of an arms treaty that could disarm all American citizens.”

Before entering into any rebellions, readers would do well to spend just a few minutes researching the claims made in that letter.

A quick check at Snopes.com quickly revealed that the information presented that the U.S. would sign such a treaty is based on “Scarelore” (Snopes) and “is erroneous in all its particulars” (again, Snopes).

The full, easily read report on this matter is available online at this Web link, http://www.snopes.com/politics/guns/untreaty.asp.

Further information contradicting the claims made in the letter is available at PolitiFact.Com at this Web link, http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2010/jun/09/chain-email/chain-e-mail-says-un-treaty-would-force-us-ban-con/.
