SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — D.J. Brown scored 33 points, the most ever by a San Jose State freshman, keying a 78-70 victory Monday night over CS Bakersfield.

Wil Carter added 14 points for the Spartans (7-13), who snapped a five-game skid. James Kinney and Calvin Douglas each had 10.

Adam Young led the Roadrunners (11-10) with 17 points. Issiah Grayson scored 14 points to go with seven assists and six rebounds. Stephon Carter added 10 for the Roadrunners, whose four-game winning streak ended.

Brown, a guard from Los Angeles, made 9 of 11 shots, including 6 of 7 from 3-point range, and went 9 of 10 from the line. His previous high had been 14 against Coppin State.

CS Bakersfield jumped to a 23-4 lead, but San Jose State rallied to take a 36-35 edge at halftime. It was the largest deficit the Spartans had overcome in coach George Nessman’s six-plus seasons.
