Girls basketball roundup: Smith, defense lead Prairie to win in San Diego

Claire Smith scored 19 points as Prairie girls basketball beat Valencia (Calif.) 50-38 on Thursday to improve to 1-1 at the SoCal Prep Holiday Classic.

Smith scored eight points in the first quarter as Prairie jumped to a 20-13 lead. The Falcons then clamped down on defense, allowing only two points in the second quarter to lead 28-15 at halftime.

The Falcons (2-5) play their final round-robin game in the San Diego tournament Friday against Cantwell Sacred Heart of Montebello, Calif.

MATER DEI (Calif.) 58, CAMAS 56 — Addison Harris scored 27 points but the Papermakers narrowly lost to one of the nation’s top teams at the Pacific Office Automation Holiday Classic in Portland.

Riley Sanz missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer against a team ranked No. 16 in the nation by SBLive/Sports Illustrated.

Camas (8-4) led by as many as 14 points in the second quarter. But the Papermakers went cold in the second half and trailed by seven points with 3:58 to play.

The Papermakers get another test against one of the nation’s best teams on Friday. Camas will face No. 4-ranked Archbishop Mitty of San Jose, Calif., at 8 p.m. at Franklin High School.

SKYVIEW 53, LAKERIDGE (Ore.) 21 — Cameron Watson scored 18 points and the Storm clamped down on defense in their opener at the Pacific Office Automation Holiday Classic in Portland.

Watson hit three of Skyview’s nine 3-pointers. Elan Estes and Kiera Parks each made three 3-pointers and finished with nine points as the Storm improved to 7-3.

UNION 49, SHOREWOOD 33 — Rowyn Riley scored 22 points as the Titans remained undefeated with a win at the Surf N Slam tournament in El Cajon, Calif.

Riley made three of Union’s eight 3-pointer. Brooklyn Haywood had nine points, all on 3-pointers, and Ava Smith had two 3-pointers among her 12 points.

Union (10-0) clamped down on defense, taking a 26-9 lead into halftime.

The Titans will face Liberty of Issaquah in the Slam Division championship game on Saturday.

MARIN ACADEMY (Calif.) 47, HOCKINSON 44 — Siena Brown scored 28 points as the Hawks lost a close game at the Surf N Slam tournament near San Diego.

Brown, the team’s lone senior, also had eight rebounds. She has averaged 22 points over two tournament games.

Hockinson led 13-8 after the first quarter with Brown scoring 12 of those points.

Nieynita Stidum added 12 points for the Hawks (2-7).

Amelia Thomas scored 21 points to lead Marin Academy of San Rafael, Calif., which improved to 8-2 this season. The Wildcats held off Hockinson late by shooting 5 for 5 at the foul line in the fourth quarter.

Hockinson concludes play at Surf N Slam in the 7th place game Saturday against Christian High of San Diego.

R.A. LONG 44, MAZAMA (Ore.) 37 — Alauna Brown scored 17 points as the Lumberjills earned their first win of the season at the Vince Dulcich Tournament in Astoria, Ore.

Breyelle Box added 11 points for R.A. Long (1-8). Evelyn Ofstun had eight points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.

R.A. Long concludes tournament play Friday against Shelton for fifth place.

MARK MORRIS 48, STEVENSON 25 — The Monarchs dialed up their defense to earn a non-league win on the road.

Mark Morris (5-3) heated up in the second quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 19-7 to build a 31-11 halftime lead. Raelie Guizotti had three consecutive steals and baskets in the quarter, finishing the game with a eight points.

Natalie Mejia also had eight points, all coming in the third quarter.

KING’S WAY CHRISTIAN 54, COUNTRY CHRISTIAN (Ore.) JV 14 — Bridget Quinn had 15 points and nine rebounds as the Knights won a road game against a varsity/JV squad from Mollala, Ore.

Kate Kessler and Addison Bagley each added 10 points for the Knights (6-3).

KELSO 54, SCOTTSDALE CHRISTIAN (Ariz.) 12 — Kenzie Milligan scored 14 points and Peyton Champagne added 11 points as the Lassies improved to 1-1 at the Cactus Jam in Scottsdale, Ariz.

WASHOUGAL 56, PORT ANGELES 52 — The Panthers were able to claw their way through a close game and take down Port Angeles for a non-league road victory. The game was tied at halftime, 29-29, and Washougal had just a one-point lead going into the fourth quarter.

Jenna Klopman, Bella Albaugh and Ireland Albaugh combined for 11 of their team’s 18 fourth-quarter points to help get the win. Klopman finished with a game-high 15 points. Bella Albaugh added 12 points and Ireland Albaugh 11.
