Howe Great draws off to win $60,000 Jersey Derby

OCEANPORT, N.J. (AP) — Howe Great took the lead near the top of the stretch and drew off to win the $60,000 Jersey Derby at Monmouth Park on Saturday, beating Fire Alarm by 114 lengths.

Trained by H. Graham Motion and ridden by Joe Bravo, the 3-year-old colt ran the 1 1/16 miles over a firm turf course in 1:42.67 and paid $2.60, $2.40 and $2.10. It was the fifth win in nine career starts for Howe Great, who has earned $322,153.

Fire Alarm returned $7 and $3.40, while Crafty Unicorn was another two lengths back in third and paid $3.40.
