Freeman, Johnson top US diving semifinals

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Local favorite Deidre Freeman finished first in the women’s 3-meter semifinals and Steele Johnson topped the men’s 10-meter field Thursday night in the U.S. national diving championships.

Freeman, the former University of Iowa star from Grinnell, scored 321.60 points to finish first in the semifinals after finishing 10th in the morning quarterfinals. Emma Ivory-Ganja qualified second at 283.90, and Maren Taylor, the gold medalist in the 1-meter Tuesday, was third at 283.60.

Johnson, the defending 10-meter champion from Carmel, Ind., scored 494.25 points in the platform semifinals. David Dinsmore was second at 416.30, followed by Jordan Windle at 399.75.

The top 12 in each event advanced to the finals.
