Ammunition found at Wy’east Middle School

Eight rounds of ammunition were found early Thursday inside a locked gate at Wy’east Middle School in Vancouver.

The rifle ammunition appears to have been thrown over the gate, said Vancouver police spokeswoman Kim Kapp. There were no reports of threats associated with the ammunition, she said.

School staff members found the ammunition around 7:30 a.m. near an exterior courtyard entrance to the school on the east side of the campus, 1112 S.E. 136th Ave., and called police resource officers. Staff members believe the ammunition was placed there between when the school was secured Tuesday evening and when it reopened Thursday morning.

It was closed Wednesday because of weather.

Vancouver police walked the interior and exterior of the campus but found no evidence of additional ammunition or any firearms, Kapp said. School staff members searched through students’ lockers and also found no threats or firearms, she said.

The searches didn’t disrupt classes, which began at 8:15 a.m., said Gail Spolar, spokeswoman for Evergreen Public Schools.

A letter was sent home with students to inform parents about the incident.

“We just want to make sure parents get accurate information about what was found, how we secured the scene and that kids were in no harm,” Spolar said. “We takes students’, as well as staff’s, safety very seriously.”
