Sumler, Western Carolina trip UNC Greensboro 70-68

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Trey Sumler scored 21 points and Western Carolina pulled away by making five free throws in the final 1:24 to beat UNC Greensboro 70-68 in a Southern Conference game Thursday night.

Tawaski King scored 13 points and Brandon Boggs 11 for the Catamounts (11-15, 8-6), who have won three in a row after four consecutive losses.

Derrell Armstrong had 18 points, Trevis Simpson scored 15 with eight rebounds and David Williams had 10 points for the Spartans (7-17, 5-8), who have lost four of five.

The Spartans led 66-65 with 1:31 left on Armstrong’s free throws, but Western Carolina’s Tom Tankelewicz hit a pair to lead 67-66 at 1:24. King made a foul shot at 1:06 for a 68-66 advantage, and Sumler made two with 18 seconds remaining for a 70-66 lead to seal it.

Western Carolina won the rebound battle 41-30, leading to 19 second-chance points.
