A cardboard box placed too close to a wall heater Wednesday sparked a fire that caused $45,000 in damage to a house in Clark County’s Green Meadows neighborhood.

Smoke alarms alerted the family of three around 5:30 a.m. Firefighters from nearby Vancouver Fire Department Station 5 arrived first to the single-story house, 6815 N.E. 70th St.

The fire burned a couple of rooms, caused smoke damage throughout the house and damaged belongings, said Clark County Fire Marshal Jon Dunaway, who reminds people to keep belongings 3 feet away from heaters to help prevent accidental fires.
