COUGAR — Self-registration for Mount St. Helens climbing permits begins on Saturday.

From November through March, climbers can get their permits at Climbers Bivouac or Marble Mountain Sno-Park. The permits are free, but are required for safety purposes in the event of an injured or missing climber.

From April through October, climbers must obtain their permit at Lone Fir Resort in Cougar. The Gifford Pinchot National Forest allows an unlimited number of climbers from April 1 through May 15, but a limit of 100 per day from May 15 through Oct. 31.

Climbing permits from April through October cost $22.
