The Young Champions event at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center on Saturday provided free heart screenings for 273 local students.

The screenings were offered to any Southwest Washington middle or high school athlete, band member or cheerleader ages 12-18. The screenings Saturday revealed heart conditions in eight students that were significant enough to require follow-up assessments.

The Quinn Driscoll Foundation, created in memory of a Vancouver student who died from sudden cardiac arrest, helped to organize the event. It was the eighth screening event by the foundation and PeaceHealth Southwest since 2010.

PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center in Longview collaborated with Spencer’s HeartStrong Foundation, created after the near-fatal cardiac episode of a Longview student, to host a screening event in Cowlitz County on Saturday. That event screened 120 students, uncovering cardiac issues requiring follow-up in six students.
