Driver hurt in hit-and-run crash on Highway 14

Second driver apprehended after leaving scene

State troopers cited a Washougal man Thursday after he allegedly left the scene of a crash that injured another driver on state Highway 14 around 5:15 that morning.

Washington State Patrol said James W. Maahs, 19, of Washougal was driving west on Highway 14 in the left lane when he attempted to move into the right lane.

Maahs swerved back into the left lane to avoid a vehicle, then struck another vehicle driven by Jeffery A. Hawes, 42, of Vancouver.

The state patrol said Maahs drove away and was later apprehended.

The state patrol said an unsafe lane change and excessive speed caused the crash, and Maahs was cited for hit and run.

Hawes was taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Washington Medical Center for his injuries. According to the hospital, he was treated and released.
