Rowers from Vancouver Lake Crew have had success on and off the water this fall.

At the Row for the Cure on Sept. 27 on the Willamette River in Portland, Vancouver Lake Crew’s high school team won the trophy for the most money raised by a rowing club.

“This is the third year we have done this, and as one of the smallest clubs in region with limited resources, I am thrilled that we are able to help other important causes,” VLC coach Alan Stewart said.

VLC teams also won three races at the Row for the Cure, the girls junior eight, the girls junior quad and the boys junior quad.

One day earlier, Nicholas John and Eric Johnson teamed to win the boys junior double at the Head of the Dog Regatta. They also earned the Bill Kalenius Memorial Trophy for being the fastest double of the day. Their time of 20 minutes, 26.958 seconds, was the fastest for all boats that day over the 5,000-meter course on Multnomah Channel.

Matthew Murphy of VLC won the boys junior single with a time of 22:15.32.

On Oct. 18, several VLC boats won at the American Lake Fall Classic in Lakewood. John and Johnson won the boys double and Pearce Fowler and Murphy placed second. Brynn Landwehr placed second in the girls single scull. Caitlin deRenee and Grace Newcomb placed third in the girls double scull.

There was a timing problem for some races, but according to Stewart, VLC teams won two other races: the men’s junior four (with coxswain) and the girls junior varsity eight (with coxswain).
