Union only undefeated team in Rugby Oregon league

The Union rugby team started fast, then pulled away in the second half on Saturday for a 45-12 win over the Portland Pumas in a Rugby Oregon high school rugby match at Laurin Middle School.

It was the first loss of the season for the Pumas, from Portland’s Central Catholic High School, and leaves Union (5-0) as the only unbeaten team in the Rugby Oregon Varsity Premiership.

Hayden Ramsay was named man of the match for Union. Ramsay scored two tries and was a solid ball carrier throughout the match according to Union coach David Curle. He said Union rose to the occasion against a physical Pumas team, with aggressive tackling and solid all-around defense keying the victory.

Union faces Battle Ground at 2:30 p.m. on April 23 at Laurin Middle School.

Prairie 44, Union No. 2 29 — Prairie got its first win of the season by beating Union’s second team on Saturday at Laurin Middle School. Payton Millet scored three tries and was awarded the player of the day for Prairie. Logan Jacques led the Prairie forwards in tackles made and Juan Marquez led the backs in tackles. Sophomore Brendan May was dominant in the line-outs for Prairie according to coach John Fletcher.

Prairie (1-2-1) plays Oregon City at 11 a.m. April 23 at Delta Park. Union’s second team visits Newberg for a 10 a.m. match on April 23.

Summit 40, Battle Ground 22 — The visitors from Bend, Ore., improved to 2-2 and kept Battle Ground winless. Details from the match were not reported to The Columbian.

Clark County 27, Southeast 14 — The Warriors improved to 3-2 in the Club Championship with Saturday’s win at Delta Park. Highlights from the match were not reported to The Columbian. Clark County (3-2) visits Polk County at 9 a.m. on April 23 at Clagget Creek Park in Keizer, Ore.

Girls rugby

Grant 62, Battle Ground 24 — First-place Grant pulled away in the second half on Saturday at Delta Park, improving to 4-0 atop the Rugby Oregon Girls Club Championship Division.

The Battle Ground Lady Pack had strong defensive efforts by Kia Miller and Hannah Foster, according to coach Troy Fallon. Scoring for Battle Ground were Christine Avdeyev, Holland Derby and Apoiliu Atuaia. The Lady Pack hosts Columbia County at 1 p.m. April 23 at Laurin Middle School.
