Weather Eye: A second hot spell in April is one for the record books

Normally in the month of April, we would be setting records for maybe a heavy rain or a chilly night. Record-breaking highs several days in a row and not for one interval but twice so far in the month? Very unusual.

At 3 p.m. Monday, it was 85 degrees in Vancouver and 86 degrees in Seattle. Almost unheard-of for April 18. The coastal beaches got into the act Sunday, with most of the Oregon and Washington coast warmer than Phoenix, Ariz. Strange but true.

Another hot one today, with highs once again in the mid- to upper 80s, and we should reach the low 80s Wednesday. Forecast charts show cooler and cloudier weather Thursday through the weekend, with a chance of showers. The timing of any rain is uncertain now.

I was at Ocean Park and Long Beach on Sunday, and I can tell you, with an offshore flow of winds, it was hot. Imagine 86 degrees right on the beach and light winds? The sand was way too warm to walk barefoot. The cool surf was welcome, yes indeed.

OK, some rainfall for March from your friends and neighbors. The month was, for most part, wetter than February! Claudia Chiasson, Carson, 13.75 inches; Tyler Mode, Battle Ground, 7.06 inches; Bob Starr, Cougar, 18.35 inches; Gary Collins, Brush Prairie, 7.18 inches; Phil Delany, above Dole Valley, 14.90 inches; Robin Ruzek, Lake Shore, 5.18 inches; Pete Conrad, near Tukes Mountain, 5.98 inches; Merle Moore, 2 miles west of Yacolt, 12.35 inches; Dan Hein, Camas, 6.69 inches; Dave Campbell, 1 mile west of Heisson, 6.74 inches; Bill Sobolewski, Livingston Mountain, 9.02 inches; Judy Darke, Felida, 5.77 inches; Larry Lebsack, Barberton, 6.24 inches; Ellen Smart, Ridgefield, 6.30 inches; Murphy Dennis, Dawson Road near Clark County Rifles, 11.54 inches; Jim Knoll, Five Corners, 6.71 inches; Bob Mode, Minnehaha, 4.95 inches; and Roland Derksen from Vancouver, B.C., 7.89 inches. The official rainfall for our Vancouver was 5.91 inches.

Whew, time for a cool iced tea. We’ll chat Thursday.
