Community notebook: Gernhart earns awards at State Xcel meet

Gymnast Gigi Gernhart earned two judges awards at the Washington State Xcel Gymnastics Championships, which were held April 16-17 in Wenatchee.

Gernhart, a 27-year-old with Down syndrome, competed for the first time with the Xcel team at Naydenov Gymnastics. She recorded her highest all-around score of the season, which coach Melissa Dougherty said was her goal for the state meet. Gernhart recorded a personal-best score on the uneven parallel bars and performed her cleanest routine of the season on floor exercise.

The judges awards were for presence on beam and for the best kick to hand stand on vault.

Xcel is a USA Gymnastics program that gives gymnasts who do not want to train every day, a chance to compete.

Union, River clash Tuesday in lacrosse

The high school boys lacrosse teams representing Union and Columbia River will battle for first place in their division today at King’s Way Christian High School. The match begins at 8 p.m.

After three wins last week, Union is atop the Central South Division of the Washington High School Boys lacrosse Association at 5-0. Columbia River enters Tuesday’s match with a 5-1 record in league games.

Union capped a three-win week on Saturday with a 13-9 win at Richland. Parker Lindhorst had three goals and three assists and Isaiah Pratt scored fige goals to lead the way. Andrew Harrah and Jarad McKinney each scored twice and goalkeeper Dominic Mendez made 11 saves.

On Friday, Union won 13-0 at Selah. Pratt scored four goals and assisted on two others. Ben Morasch and Lindhorst each had two goals. Also scoring were Andrew Harrah, Christian Boylan, Cayden Thompson, Nate Lindquist and Mickael Fulmer.

On Wednesday Union topped Camas 15-5 behind five goals and three assists from Lindhorst and five goals from Pratt. For Camas, Matt Weilinski and Adam Soubh each scored twice and Weilinski had two assists.

After facing Columbia River on Tuesday, Union hosts Richland at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Harmony Sports Complex and hosts Selah at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cardon Field at Camas High School.

Columbia River won a pair of road games over the weekend, beating Southridge of Kennewick 10-9 on Friday and beating Selah 18-3. Details from those matches were not reported to The Columbian. This Saturday at 1 p.m., Columbia River hosts Southridge at Jason Lee Middle School.

Camas split a pair of road games over there weekend, losing 16-1 on Friday at Richland and beating Southridge 9-6 on Saturday. Eight players scored in that Camas win, with Grant Henzi scoring twice. Camas hosts Southridge at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Cardon Field.

Girls lacrosse — The Evergreen Lacrosse Club lost a pair of high school girls lacrosse games last week at McKenzie Stadium.

On April 19, Central Catholic of Portland defeated Evergreen Lacrosse Club 16-5. Midfielder Audrey Thompson and attack Destinie Maddock scored two goals alice and attack Shayna Davis scored once. Goalie Sarah Brown had eight saves.

On Saturday, ELC lost to visiting Eastside Catholic 20-0 to fall to 1-7 on the season. Evergreen visits Bellarmine Prep of Tacoma today and Klahowya on Thursday, then hosts Newport of Bellevue at noon on Saturday at McKenzie Stadium.

Union rugby keeps rolling

The Union rugby program picked up a pair of wins on Saturday, with the Titans No. 1 team remaining unbeaten and the No. 2 squad earning its first win of the season.

Union No. 1 rolled to a 35-0 win over Battle Ground. Jake Burchett was the man of the match for Union, at 6-0 the only unbeaten team in the Varsity Premiership Division of Rugby Oregon’s high school league.

Union No. 2 won 36-31 at Newberg for its first victory. Gurtej Singh was the Union man of the match and Manu Sene played a strong game carrying the ball according to coach David Curle.

This week, Union No. 1 takes on Reynolds at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Delta Park, followed by Union No. 2 (1-4-1) against Oregon City at 3 p.m.

Battle Ground (0-3-2) hosts Newberg at 1 p.m. Saturday at Laurin Middle School.

The Prairie High rugby team fell to Oregon City 44-10 on Saturday. Prairie coach John Fletcher said Oregon City’s depth wore down his team. Fletcher said that Gavin Schmitt and Trevor Heasley had strong performances in the loss. This week, Prairie (1-3-1) faces Lincoln at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Delta Park.

In the Club Championship division for teams that draw players from multiple high schools, the Clark County Warriors lost on Saturday at Polk County, 38-19. This week, Clark County (3-3) hosts the Beaverton Barbarians A team at 11 a.m. Saturday at Skyridge Middle School.

Girls rugby — The Battle Ground Lady Pack beat Columbia County 65-0 on Saturday. Paige Fallon, Allison Bignall, Marrisa Griffs and Corey Swenson scored multiple tries. This week, the Battle Ground girls (3-2) face North Clackamas at 2 p.m. Saturday at Delta Park.

33rd RACC is May 7

The 33rd Ride Around Clark County will take place May 7, with cyclists able to choose among four courses ranging from 18 miles to 100 miles.

Considered the annual kickoff to cycling season, the event is staged by the Vancouver Bicycle Club. Money raised helps the club support charities, among them the American Diabetes Association, American Lung Association, Bike Clark County, League of American Bicyclists, Open House Ministries, Washington Bikes and the Waste Connections Christmas Bicycle Promise.

Cost to ride is $35 for the 34-, 66- and 100-mile courses and $30 for the 18-mile course, which is new this year. There are discounts for youth riders who register with a participating adult rider.

The courses start and finish at Clark County. The courses open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 5 p.m.

CCRC Heritage Trail results

Nathan Huit of Wilsonville, Ore., won a 7-mile Clark County Running Club race on the Heritage Trail on Saturday. The 48-year-old finished in 45 minutes and 33 seconds, more than three minutes ahead of the runner up. Madeline Sellers of Stevenson was the first woman to finish. Her time was 56:42.

Camille Wise, 20, of Camas won the 3-mile run in 20:07.
