A furious rally came up just short for the host Hawks as the Panthers prevailed in the Class 2A Greater St. Helens League game.

Washougal led by 15 points at the end of three quarters. Hockinson got within a point late in the game, but did not pull even. In the final seconds, Logan Klodt intentially missed his second free throw, Kedrick Johnson grabbed the rebound but his tough-angle put-back missed as time ran out.

Curtis Crosby scored 21 points for Washougal (8-10, 4-6).

The Panthers’ shooting cooled in the fourth quarter and Hockinson (8-10, 3-7) controlled the defensive boards to spark the Hawks’ rally. Five Hockinson players scored in the final period as the Hawks outscored the Panthers 17-4.

“We just dug our feet in and played some good defense” in the fourth quarter, Hockinson coach Manny Melo said.

Ry Paulsen led the Hawks with 16 points, Kinai Kiyokawa scoed 11 and Ryder Poverud 10.
